Communication Access Realtime Translation Career

The same realtime technology that allows reporters to transcribe television programming for the deaf community also extends to the classroom in a realtime captioning career known as CART Providing. In this role, the realtime reporter transfers the spoken word into readable text on a computer screen, allowing a deaf student to be mainstreamed for participation in a standard classroom setting. The CART reporter can either attend classes with a student in order to translate the lectures and class discussions into text, or this can be done remotely, where the CART reporter works off-site through the use of an audiofeed. These captioning services are called communication access realtime translation, or CART. Providing CART services for the hard-of-hearing and deaf community can be an extremely rewarding career. The Americans with Disabilities Act covers CART Provider services, and the demand for CART reporters exceeds the capacity to provide them.
