Communication Access Realtime Translation The same real-time technology that allows reporters to transcribe television for the hard-of-hearing and deaf also extends to the classroom. In this role, the real-time reporter again transfers the spoken word into readable text in the elementary, high school or college classroom. A reporter will attend classes with a student in order to translate the lectures and class discussions into text. This service is called communication access realtime translation, or CART. The Americans with Disabilities Act covers CART services, and the demand for CART reporters exceeds the capacity to provide them. |
