Communication Access Realtime Translation Career
The same realtime technology that allows reporters to transcribe television for the deaf community also extends to the classroom in a realtime captioning career known as CART Providing. In this role, the realtime reporter transfers the spoken word into readable text on a computer screen, allowing a deaf student to be mainstreamed for participation in a standard classroom setting. The Cart reporter can either attend classes with a student in order to translate the lectures and class discussions into text, or this can be done remotely, where the Cart reporter works off-site through the use of an audiofeed. These services are called communication access realtime translation, or CART. Providing career services for the hard-of-hearing and deaf can be an extremely rewarding career. The Americans with Disabilities Act covers CART Provider services, and the demand for CART reporters exceeds the capacity to provide them.
